Dr. Siti Fairus Abdul Sani (PhD, UK)

Head of Radiation Laboratory

Dr. Siti Fairus has successfully completing her PhD studies in 2015 in a period of less than three years, at just 2 years and 5 months at University of Surrey, United Kingdom (UK) specialization in Radiation and Medical Physics field. She was also an undergraduate at the University of Surrey, UK, gaining BSc degree in Physics. Upon completing her PhD, she joined University of Malaya as postdoctoral research fellow at Department of Physics for a period of 6 months. She was later appointed as senior lecturer in Department of Physics in 2016. Dr. Siti Fairus represents the rebirth of radiation physics research at the University of Malaya (UM), with the few remaining radiation group senior members now all having retired. She was the Deputy Head of Radiation Protection Services Unit, UM from 2016 to 2017. She is also a Certified Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) since 2017

In 2016, Dr. Siti Fairus spearheading a presentation at the Malaysian Technology Exposition (MTE) that later followed by International Invention & Innovation Exhibition (ITEX), winning Gold Medals. She has also received The Best Innovator for Academician and Platinum Award for International Summit on Innovation and Design Exposition (Inside) in 2020. She has lead the Radiation Laboratory in supervising 12 PhDs, 6 MSc and 37 undergraduate students within 4 years from 2017 to 2021. In this, she has involved her students in research into disease, particular issues including the characterisation of EMT, FDFT1 and amyloidosis (novel signs of recognition of breast, bladder and lung respectively); passive form dosimeters (silica glass and graphite materials); radiation sterilisation; natural radioactivity concentration; optical characterisation of radiation damage and, medical and nuclear reactor of Monte Carlo (MCNPX) simulation studies. To date, she has published more than 65 research publications, all in Q1 and Q2 journals (h-index: 10), with seminal work published in the journal Scientific Reports, one of a family of journals published by the Nature publishing group. She has also presented her work orally at international conferences, including in Prague, Crete, Italy, Beijing, Australia, Mexico, India and Indonesia.
